Learn and Experience Sumo

Interested in learning more about the Japanese sport Sumo? Or even a chance to participate in a friendly match against them?

Now you have the chance of booking a program aimed for visitors to Japan that goes over the history, rules and techniques of the sport before everyone getting either a chance to crush the wrestlers (or be crushed!) or opt for pictures with them.

The programs concludes with an opportunity to taste the same type of food the sumo wrestlers eat, and time for Q&A with the wrestlers. 

 

WHEN: The show is held three times a week in different venues, either in the Asakusa or Ryogoku areas

WHO: Two retired sumo wrestlers and English-speaking staff runs the show.

WHERE: The details on venue and address will be provided at the time of booking.

RATES: 10,000 yen for adults (over 12 yo)/6,000 yen for kids between 4-11. Kids under 3 can join for free but must sit on the lap of an accompanying person. Payable through PayPal at the time of booking.

Monday (in Asakusa, 11:45-13:30)

Low chairs/table on top of tatami-mats, take off shoes at entrance. On second floor with no elevators. 8 minutes from Asakusa Station.

 

Lunch after the show featuring tonkatsu (pork cutlets) and chanko-nabe (sumo cuisine, hot stew consisting of chicken, vegetables)


Tuesday (in Ryogoku, 09:45-11:15)

Only show with demonstrations performed on real-sized sumo ring. Next to West Exit of JR Ryogoku Station.

Receive a voucher for a complimentary meal at one of the dozen restaurants within the facility after the show.


Thursday (in Ryogoku, 11:45-13:30)

Table and chairs, does not require shoes to be taken off.

On third floor, elevators available. 1 minute from the East Exit of JR Ryogoku Station.

Meals after the show consists of barbecued lamb meat with rice, plus chanko-nabe. 


DETAILS ON BOOKING:

Advance reservations are necessary for this event. Venues can hold up to 50 people and does get full during peak months April and October.

 

If you have any dietary restrictions, contact us at the time of the booking (NOT possible to inform venue directly on the day of the program). Although not guaranteed, the restaurant make the utmost attempt to accommodate any needs as long as the information is received in advance.

 

The program is aimed mainly for English-speaking visitors. The show will be conducted entirely in English.

Travelling as a big group?

 

The sumo program is great for corporate events, team building or educational trips.

A private session can be arranged outside of the regularly scheduled shows, with the option to include meals or not.
