Hokuriku Shinkansen opening

The Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train service will commence on March 14th, connecting the cities of Kanazawa and Toyama directly with Tokyo. Japan Rail Pass holders will be able to use all trains on the Hokuriku Shinkansen such as the "Kagayaki" (fast train with limited stops) and "Hakutaka" (stopping at all stations along the way).

The city of Kanazawa on the Sea of Japan coast (and popular with tourists) currently takes a minimum of 3 hours 47 minutes by train (via Echigo Yuzawa) but the new bullet trains will link the city in a minimum of 2 hours and 28 minutes, cutting travel time drastically.

For the Kagayaki fast train (10 x daily) a seat reserrvation will be compulsory with a total price tag of 14,120 yen.  The slower Hakutaka train will be a mix of reserved and non-reserved cars and will run 14 x daily,  taking around three hours to Kanazawa.
