It's Official: Tsukiji Market Relocation will be Postponed

Newly elected Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike has decided to postpone the relocation of the Tsukiji Market to Toyosu. Koike made the announcement in a press conference held on Aug 31st.

Koike said the relocation will be delayed until February 2017 at the earliest. The original plan was for the move to take place on November 7th.

Work has already begun on a new road that will connect the central city with the athlete village for the 2020 Olympics. The buildings in the Tsukiji Market will have to be removed in order for the construction to continue.

There are concerns of soil contamination at the new Toyosu Market, as it was the site of a gas plant in the past. The construction for the new market has already been completed.
