Operation suspended on Hakone Ropeway

May 19 - Operation was suspended on the Hakone Ropeway after the Meteorological Agency raised the volcanic alert level in this area from Level 1 to Level 2, citing increased seismic activity in Owakudani. Roads to the area have also shut down meaning the Owakudani Volcanic Valley area will be completely off-limits until further notice. Replacement buses will run between Sounzan and Togendai, with connections to the Lake Ashi cruises.

It is the first time since 2015 that the alert level has been raised to "2", but visitors should note the restriction only affects a small area around Owakudani and other areas in Hakone are operating as normal.

(Update June 10: The alert remain effective as minor earthquakes are still detected in the area. Owakudani is off-limits and the Hakone Ropeway is not operating)
