There are a few openings scheduled in 2026 that is worthy of note for visitors to Tokyo.
On February 5th, the PokePark Kanto will open within the grounds of the Yomiuri Land, an amusement park located about 30 minutes west of Shinjuku Station on the Keio Line. It will be a Pokemon themed park in an outdoor setting. Entry tickets will need to be purchased in advance.
BASEGATE Yokohama Kannai is opening next to JR Kannai Station in Yokohama on March 19th. Built on the former site of the Yokohama City Hall, it will feature a new hotel by Hoshino Resort, immersive experience facility called Wonderia Yokohama and a live viewing facility for the Yokohama DeNA Baystars who play their home games at nearby Yokohama Stadium.
MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives is opening in Takanawa Gateway City on March 28. It will mark the final phase of the large redevelopment project led by JR East. The building designed by architect Kengo Kuma will feature themed exhibits. Kuma also designed the adjacent Takanawa Gateway Station.
As announced earlier on this blog, the Edo-Tokyo Museum will be reopening March 31st after undergoing four years of renovation. The museum focuses on the 400 year history of the city and is a great way to get orientated with the background of Tokyo.
The "Odaiba Fountain" (the official name still under consideration) is expected to open in the Odaiba area of the Tokyo waterfront by the end of March. This project led by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will feature a water fountain that is 150 meters high and 250 meters wide, making it one of the largest fountains in the world. The government has been heavily criticized for spending roughly USD17 million on this project.
Meanwhile a few closures are also coming up. The Immersive Fort Tokyo will be closing its doors permanently on February 28th. It had occupied the building that was previously the Venus Fort Tokyo shopping mall. The Saitama Super Arena will be closing for extensive renovations from January 13th with a duration of up to 18 months. This is the largest arena in Japan and when it opened in 2000 it hosted two NHL games. A pair of NBA regular season games were also played in 2003 and the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2006.
